Flowman Leisure Ltd was set up in 1989 to meet the training needs of leisure facility operators, particularly swimming pools. The company provided certificated and custom-built training courses for leisure facility staff, from attendant level through to managers, and quickly built a large portfolio of satisfied clients from both the public and private sectors. During the nineties the company developed its consultancy services and gained a reputation for providing sound, professional advice and impartial reports, particularly in the field of swimming pool operation. In the ‘noughties’ the company continued to expand and developed an Engineering Department and a Sales Department in addition to their original Training arm. The Engineering department carries out pool plant installations, maintenance, servicing and repairs and the Sales side covers everything associated with swimming and spa pools and the complementary sauna and steam market. Flowman’s services mainly cover Scotland and the North of England. The partners, David Lowe and John Mannion, who have each been in the industry for over 45 years, are members of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers and are qualified by examination with the Institute of Sports and Recreation Management – (ISRM, now CIMSPA). They are also on the Education Board of the Pool and Spa Operators Qualifications (PASOQ). They continue to run Flowman with the same eye for detailed personal service that established their reputation and are supported by a staff team who are skilled in all aspects of facility management, operation and pool plant installation and repairs.
Over the years our training courses have helped thousands of people to realise their potential within the leisure industry. Our courses cover every aspect of pool water technology and pool plant operation and are held regularly throughout the year. The training is supported by Flowman’s wide and long engineering experience in carrying out installations, repairs and planned maintenance. Course places enjoy a very high demand and we urge interested parties to contact us direct to find out about availability.
We offer comprehensive 3-day PASOQ (Pool and Spa Operators Qualifications) Technician Certificate courses throughout the year. We also offer a 1-day PASOQ Foundation Certificate course, subject to demand. Additionally, we run the annual 1-day PASOQ Technician Certificate Revalidation update seminar and workshop. This Revalidation recognises other 3-day qualifications e.g. ISRM / CIMSPA, AIQ, STA etc., and certificate holders are placed on the PASOQ (UK) Pool Technician Register that is open to view on the PASOQ website. These PASOQ courses are endorsed by ISPE and generously supported by Lovibond Tintometer pool water testing. For further details about PASOQ visit www.pasoq.co.uk.
Flowman also provides the above certificated courses as an in-house package to many organisations. Additionally, we can customise staff training to be site-specific and suit the needs of a particular pool and plant room. All our training courses comply fully with:-
- The Health and Safety Executive’s document, HSG179
- The Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) Code of Practice for Swimming Pool Water – 2016 (updated to reflect the requirements of Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools (HSG179) November 3, 2017) and
- The PWTAG current manual, Swimming Pool Water : Treatment & Quality Standards for Pools and Spas.
The course tutors are the Flowman partners, David Lowe and John Mannion and William Durrand from Highlife Highland. Attendees on all Flowman training courses have unlimited access to a free Helpline for plant room or water quality management, following their training. Using our knowledge from both the operational and construction sides of the leisure industry, our ISPE-endorsed training courses are devised to meet the needs of you, the client. Therefore we conduct all the training on your own site so that your participants, up to a maximum of 12, learn about their own swimming pool/spa facilities. (Dates can normally be fitted in to suit.)
We run 2 x 1 day courses, Level 1 & Level 2; based upon the PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) guidelines that all local EHO’s will look to see that you are running your facilities under.
Level 1 is aimed at participants who have never had any dealings with pool water before, and Level 2 is for those who are more experienced and have more familiarity with pool water and the operations of a swimming pool.
Level 1
- Health & Safety
- Pool types and how they work
- Filtration
- Disinfection chemicals and pH control
- Breakpoint chlorination
- Pool/Spa water testing
We will certificate all participants upon successful completion of the assessment which is taken on the day, for 14 months.
Level 2
- The correct pool water testing techniques
- The principles of pool water chemical dosing
- The essential tests to ensure swimming pool water quality
- Maintaining water balance in a swimming pool
- Pool equipment
- Contamination procedures
- Legionella awareness
- Preventing the formulation of undesirable smells or taste in the water
We will certificate all participants upon successful completion of the assessment which is taken on the day, for 36 months.
We also run a plant room engineers’ course, in which the 4 main staff are trained on their own plant room, and learn how to run their plant room and pool to the correct operational standards. This course lasts 1 day, and all of the staff would receive signed training records on completion of the training.
The prices of the courses are based on a daily rate, so the course costs are lower per participant if maximum numbers are achieved. The price for the Level 1 & 2 courses are £720 + VAT, expenses are dependent on travel distances. The price for the plant room engineers course is £600 + VAT, expenses are dependent on travel distances.
